Identify This Plant
Question: Recently, we rescued an indoor tree that someone had discarded. It seems to be in good condition. However, we don't know what it is and hope you can identify it. If so, could you also give us some information as to how to care for it. I've attached two pictures. Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide. - Ja & Joseph
Judy's Answer: Hi Ja & Joseph,
It looks like you rescued a Pleomole or Dracaena reflexa ( sometimes called Song of India when it has a yellow variation). This is a quite expensive tree if purchased at a nursery. I think with a little care, you're going to have a great plant. The reflexa is a slow growing tree, but can reach heights of 8- 12 feet. It likes a temperature of around 70-75 degrees but can do all right if it gets a little lower or higher. The important thing to remember is that it requires very little water. it does best in medium light. The greener the leaves the less light it needs; the more color variation on the leaves the more light it needs. Trim back the branches that have lost leaves and they will send out new shoots. Hope this helps in your rescue efforts. When in doubt, do not water!! I've attached a picture of a reflexa just to make sure we are talking about the same plant. - Judy
