I want to root the clipping
Question: I have several ivy plants and I want to root the clipping to make another plant. I put the cuttings and I am not getting roots. What can I do? - Beverly
Judy's Answer:
Hi Beverly, Rooting ivies should be pretty simple just follow these steps & hopefully it will work for you.
1. Take 3"-6" stem cuttings from the new green stems. These root much easier & much faster than the old woody stems.
2. Make sure that each of these cuttings have several (3-5) bumpy nodes. A node is where the leave is attached to the stem.
3. Cut off the bottom two or three leaves
4. Fill a small plant pot or tray with a high quality potting soil that has been well moistened
5. Gently push the cuttings into the soil and carefully water
6. Cover the pot or tray with clear plastic wrap to increase the humidity (you can also use a clear plastic deli container)
7. Place the pot or try in a warm location, but not in direct sun
8. If condensation builds up on the plastic, remove it for a few hours & let the ivies air out or they will rot.
9. After a few weeks gently pull on the cuttings to see if they have rooted.
10. If you feel they have begun to develop roots, remove the plastic. Wait another 2-3 weeks to be absolutely sure, watering the ivies when the top soil begins to dry out.
11. The ivies should root in 4-6 weeks. The younger the stem cuttings & the warmer the location the faster the ivies will root.
12. Good luck! Let me know what happens. - Judy
